Common Causes for Car Accidents

Imagine, it is Monday morning and you are getting ready for work and you get in your car without a care in the world. You are thinking about all the phone calls and emails you will need to return after the weekend when all of a sudden you are in a car accident, the car behind you rear-ended and pushed you into another vehicle. You are angry and now going to be late to work. But what if you were able to avoid being in a car accident all together?

According to the Huffington Post, there are common causes for motor vehicle accidents. Here is a list of the top three common causes of an accident and tips on how to avoid them:

  1. Distracted Driving –is the leading cause of car accidents in the United States every year. Just simply thinking of all the things you need to do in a day or reaching behind you to hand your child a toy can distract you from driving. Try avoiding talking on the phone, texting, eating, and taking your eyes off the road to reduce your risk in getting into an accident.
  2. Speeding – is the second common cause of car accidents because it is something that is so easy to do. We can be easily tempted to “go faster” if we are in a rush or just tried of sitting in traffic. Being mindful of the speed limit and not speeding can help you avoid an accident.
  3. Tailgating – is another common cause for car accidents. However, there is never a reason to get to close to the vehicle in front of you. Always maintaining a safe distance (2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you) will help you avoid slamming into them if they make an unexpected stop.

Although accidents can be avoidable they still happen. So, what to do if you are in a car accident?

  1. Stop and protect the scene – you should never leave an accident scene and you should make sure you have moved you vehicle out of the road or travel lanes (if possible) or if you are unable to, then have your hazards on
  2. Call the police – filing a police report can be scary, but your insurance company may need it. The police will take all parties (including witnesses, if any) statements and you will be able to obtain a copy if needed.
  3. Take pictures and exchange information – always take pictures of your vehicle’s damage and of all other vehicles or property involved in the accident so you can submit to the insurance company and your attorney. Also, it is important to exchange insurance information with all parties involved to file your statement.
  4. Seek medical attention – If needed, seek medical attention as soon as possible, as this may impact your insurance claim.
